the White Space

The White Space is a stop-motion animation satire about a white cube gallery hosting an exhibition featuring my cat, with my mom centred as the artist and curated by a white curator for white audiences. This project serves as an imaginative exploration of 'poor images' existing in gallery spaces, with the aim to question the Western, white-dominated art world and its feigned neutrality.

My skepticism revolves around the idea of the white cube being a "neutral" space for displaying artwork, especially when confronted with discussions on decolonizing museums and galleries. These discussions often overlook local discourses and remain confined within a white-dominated worldview. The white space, in reality, is pregnant with its own biases. What a white cube represents isn't a neutral ground for all forms of art but a form of universalism that mandates adherence to its white-centric and Anglo-American-centric politics.

In this 'exhibition', I intentionally spotlight my mom as the artist, as she is the author of the photos and videos featuring my cat. The work can only live on Youtube as I applied a gamified element to the watching experience by using Youtube's recommendation feature, where at the end of the video, two mysterious artworks are presented by the curator, and my mom's Tik Tok cat meme creations are linked.
